Modern technology has produced a large crop of organs designed to imitate the B-3. These high-tech devices have enjoyed some success and the best of them are truly worthy instruments, yet the sound of the B-3 has never been duplicated. In the end, the only instrument that sounds exactly like a Hammond tone wheel organ, is a Hammond tone wheel organ. And the B-3 mystique goes beyond even its unmatched sound. From a player's perspective, no other instrument feels like a B-3. This massive console organ with its, rocker switches, presets, drawbar banks, and most of all its manuals (a.k.a. keyboards) with their legendary one-of-a-kind action, all combine to make the sensation of playing a B-3 a singularly exhilarating and satisfying experience. The
B-3's sound is generated using 91 mechanical tone wheels, rotating through
a magnetic field to induce sine waveforms at 91 separate frequencies.
This low-tech analog mechanism creates a warm, rich, punchy, full-bodied
tone unmatched by any instrument. No longer feasible to manufacture for
cost reasons, the tone wheel organs will never be built again.
